โ All Travel Guides
After coordinating group tours to Australia and New Zealand, I've learned exactly what travelers wish they'd packed โ and what they wish they'd left at home. This is the definitive list I send to every traveler joining my January 2028 tour.
Australia and New Zealand in January means summer in the Southern Hemisphere โ but don't be fooled. Temperatures can swing wildly, especially in New Zealand where you might hike a glacier in the morning and enjoy warm Queenstown sunshine in the afternoon. You need to pack for variety.
The golden rule for group travel: pack light, pack smart. You'll be moving hotels frequently, loading luggage onto coaches, and navigating airports. Everything in this list earns its weight.
Luggage: Start with the Right Bag
For a 17-day trip, most travelers do well with one checked bag and a carry-on. I strongly recommend a spinner suitcase under 26" for checked luggage โ easier to maneuver on cobblestones and coach storage. Here are my top picks:
๐งณ
Samsonite Omni PC Hardside Spinner
24" expandable spinner. Lightweight, TSA-approved lock, scratch-resistant shell.
Kelly's Pick Because:
Fits in most overhead bins AND works as checked luggage. The hard shell survived every conveyor belt I've thrown it on.

Kelly's Pick Because:
I wear this every single day on tour. Holds my passport, phone, water bottle, and sunscreen without the bulk.

๐ก Kelly's Tip
Australia and New Zealand use Type I power outlets (two flat diagonal pins). You MUST bring a universal adapter โ your US devices will not plug in without one. I've seen travelers stranded without one on day one!
Clothing: Pack for Summer & Layers
January is peak summer in both countries, but New Zealand's South Island can get surprisingly cool, especially near Milford Sound and in the mountains around Queenstown. Here's how I recommend building your travel wardrobe:
The Clothing Formula
- 5โ6 lightweight tops โ quick-dry fabric is a must. Merino wool is worth the investment.
- 2 pairs of travel pants โ convertible zip-off pants are perfect for touring and hiking.
- 1 pair of shorts โ for Sydney beach days and warm city exploration.
- 1 lightweight rain jacket โ NZ weather is famously unpredictable. Non-negotiable.
- 1 fleece or mid-layer โ for Milford Sound and evening Queenstown.
- 1 nice dinner outfit โ some restaurants and cultural events are semi-formal.
- Comfortable walking shoes โ you'll average 8โ12k steps a day on tour.
- Swimwear โ for the Great Barrier Reef and hotel pools.
- Sun hat & sunglasses โ UV levels in Australia are extremely high. Protect yourself!
๐
Merino Wool Travel T-Shirt
Odor-resistant, temperature-regulating, wrinkle-free. Pack 3 and you're set for 17 days.
Kelly's Pick Because:
Merino wool works in 90ยฐF Sydney heat AND cool NZ evenings. I've worn mine for 4 days straight on tour โ no one could tell.

Health & Safety Essentials
Australia in particular has some of the world's strongest UV radiation. Sun protection is not optional โ it's survival. Here's what every traveler on my tours absolutely must bring:
- SPF 50+ sunscreen โ buy extra, you'll use more than you expect at the Great Barrier Reef.
- Insect repellent โ especially for any outdoor activities in Queensland.
- Prescription medications โ bring more than you think you'll need, plus copies of prescriptions.
- Basic first aid kit โ blister plasters are the #1 most-used item on every tour.
- Travel insurance documents โ EF Go Ahead includes coverage, but keep paperwork accessible.
- Reusable water bottle โ tap water is safe and delicious in both countries. Stay hydrated!
๐
Travel First Aid Kit โ Compact
100-piece kit in a waterproof bag. Blister pads, bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relief.
Kelly's Pick Because:
Blister plasters alone are worth the purchase. I've seen grown adults nearly in tears from day-3 foot blisters.

Hydro Flask 32oz Wide Mouth Bottle
Keeps drinks cold for 24 hours. Durable, leakproof, and fits most cup holders on tour coaches.
Kelly's Pick Because:
I've had mine for 4 years and it still looks new. Cold water in Australian summer heat is life-changing.

๐
Anker 20,000mAh Portable Charger
Charges iPhone 7+ times. Two USB-A + one USB-C output. Airline safe capacity.
Kelly's Pick Because:
